Chemistry is everything with respect to building an outstanding team. When you interact with teams of people, you know when you experience a group that truly cares for each other, exhibits mutual respect in all that they do, and works together to accomplish unified objectives. It's difficult to put into words, but you know when you experience it.
How does that happen? Is it luck? No, it is not luck.
That magical chemistry is the result of great leadership and discipline. Great leaders have a vision for what they want to accomplish, and they communicate it enthusiastically in everything that they do. This enthusiasm and vision is attactive to others. Great people want to be surrounded by other, similarly self-motivated outstanding people. Exemplary leaders attract people who are motivated, hungry, and grateful for the opportunity to become a part of something bigger than themselves. As related in Good to Great, by Jim Collins, they're concerned more with who is on the bus, not where the bus is going. If the right people are on the bus, they will determine the right place for the bus to go.
Once you have the right people on the bus, successful leaders instill a discipline to do the right things to be successful. Success isn't instantaneous. It is the result of doing a series of activities, relentlessly, over and over. Great leaders, who put together great teams, also instill great discipline to do what is right, over and over.
The lesson: it's about the people. Get the right people on your team. Surround yourself with smart, grateful, and self-motivated people who want to be a part of an exemplary team. And arm them with the resources to accomplish great goals.
